St John's church sits astride the remaining gate in the city walls, this was the gate leading out of the city towards Gloucester, the road crossed the Frome just the other side of the gate and then climbed Christmas steps seen in another photograph in this gallery and then on up St. Michael's Hill. It was a steep climb out of the city to the north in medieval times
